Since the advent of the Internet and its drastic increase in popularity, people have always wanted an easier time to search for what they need. One of the recent developments that is making headlines in the online world is social bookmarking. With these method of bookmarking, users can bookmark websites and other online resources. They can then “tag” these bookmarks with keywords that describe what others can expect from the websites these bookmarks link to, as well as help search engines to see these bookmarks if they are connected with the search terms that were entered. For example, if you are a freelance web designer you can use this service to collect inspirational materials you find on the Web.

This kind of bookmarking started off in April 1996, with the launch of it List – this website provided a venue for both public and private bookmarks. A lot of other similar websites soon followed and the service became competitive. They upgraded their services to provide folders for organization of the bookmarks, capabilities to e-mail the bookmarked links to others, and so forth. However, without a consistent revenue scheme, these companies started to go under one by one.

In 2003, Delicious pioneered “tagging,” and also coined the term that we call this kind of bookmarking to this day. Other websites followed suit, with some focusing on certain niches such as business news or social activities. These newer services have learned from the shortcomings of the first batch, using their resources to create revenue-generating processes with their websites.

It looks like this method of bookmarking is here to stay. With the ease created by “tagging” in managing and searching for these bookmarks, more people are getting into this kind of bookmarking and using them for their own amusement and benefit. It is not too late for you to learn it, if you haven’t. It will surely change your online experience for the better, that is a guarantee.
